The Second Passport
I found the second passport on a Sunday. Not hidden — sitting in the drawer of his desk as though it belonged there, as though having two identities was a thing that required no concealment. The name on it was not James Marsh. The name on it was Crown Prince Aleksei Volkov of Kravenia.

The Beginning
The beginning was this: Crown Prince Aleksei Volkov had been sent to live in the West at twenty-two, under a false identity, because his country was in political crisis and his life was in danger and the royal family had decided that the safest place for the heir to the throne was somewhere no one would look for him.

The Decision
I spent three days thinking. Not talking to James — I needed the three days to be alone with what I knew and what I felt and what I was being asked to decide. He gave me the space. He did not press. He waited, which was either patience or strategy, and I was no longer certain I could tell the difference.

Kravenia
Kravenia was not what I expected. I had expected grandeur — palaces, ceremony, the weight of history. What I found was a country in the middle of something: a political transition that had been ongoing for a decade and that had not yet resolved, a population that was divided, a royal family that was navigating the space between tradition and the modern world with varying degrees of success.

The Press
The press conference was Aleksei's idea. I said: "You want to tell them everything?" He said: "Everything that matters. The false identity, the marriage, the return. Before Varen does." I said: "And the parts that don't matter?" He said: "We protect those." I said: "What parts don't matter?" He said: "The parts that are ours."

The Test
The test was positive. I sat in the bathroom of the Crown Prince's suite in the palace of Kravenia and looked at the result and thought: I have been in this country for six days. I have been a princess for six days. And now I am going to be a mother.

Varen's Move
Varen moved on a Thursday. He called a session of the Royal Council and presented a formal challenge to Aleksei's succession, citing the false identity and the foreign marriage as evidence of unsuitability for the crown. It was procedurally correct and politically calculated and entirely expected.

The Child
My son was born in the spring, in the palace of Kravenia, with Aleksei holding my hand and the palace healer and the royal physician both present and the sound of the country outside the window. He was born into a succession dispute and a political transition and a marriage built on a lie that had become something true, and he arrived with the absolute certainty of a being who does not yet know that the world is complicated.
