The Divorce Papers
The divorce papers arrived on a Tuesday. I had signed them three months ago. Seeing them finalised — stamped, dated, official — was different from signing them. Signing them had been a transaction. Receiving them was a verdict.

What Daniel Knew
He came to my apartment on a Wednesday. I let him in because I had not yet learned to not let him in, which was the problem in its entirety.

The Green Card
The green card arrived on a Friday. I held it in my hands and thought: this is what I came for. This is the thing I traded two years of my life for. This is the thing that was supposed to make everything worth it. I felt nothing. Which was, I understood, the problem.

The Saturday
We went to the cilantro place on Saturday. It was exactly as I had expected: small, crowded, with a menu that required explanation and a server who was patient with our questions. Daniel ordered for both of us, which he had always done when we went somewhere new, because he was better at reading menus than I was and because I had let him, which was the first thing I had let him do that was not in the arrangement.

The Practical Problem
The practical problem was that we were divorced. The legal, documented, officially-finalised divorce was a fact that did not change because of a Saturday lunch and a conversation about cilantro. I was an engineer. I understood facts.

Starting Over
We started over. Not from the beginning — we could not go back to the beginning, and I was not sure I would have wanted to. We started from where we were: two people who knew each other's habits and histories and failures, who had been through something together and come out the other side changed, who were choosing each other with full information.

The Project
Daniel's community centre project was approved in May. He asked me to consult on the structural engineering. I said: "Is this professional or personal?" He said: "Both." I said: "That's complicated." He said: "We're good at complicated." I said: "Yes. We are."

The Proposal
He proposed in June. Not at a restaurant, not with a ring in a champagne glass — at the community centre site, in hard hats, with the structural drawings spread out on a folding table and the sound of construction in the background. He said: "I want to build things with you. Not just this. Everything." I said: "Is that a proposal?" He said: "Yes." I said: "It's not very romantic." He said: "I know. I can do it again with flowers and a restaurant if you want." I said: "No." He said: "No?" I said: "No, I don't want flowers and a restaurant. I want this. This is exactly right." He said: "Is that a yes?" I said: "Yes."
