Dante Caruso paid two million dollars for the right to call me his wife. My father accepted. Neither of them asked me.

He had three rules. One: I did not leave the compound without him or his men. Two: I did not contact Marco or anyone connected to him. Three: I did not lie to him. He said the first two were for my safety. He said the third was for his.

My father met with the Salazar family on a Friday. He came home with a signed agreement and a smile he could not quite make convincing. I knew before he told me. I had always known, I think, what kind of man he was capable of being.

I wore a blue dress and my mother's earrings and I sat at a restaurant table between my husband and my father and I smiled at a man named Fuentes and I was, for the first time in my life, exactly as powerful as I appeared to be.

Fuentes stayed with the Caruso family. My father's arrangement with the Salazars collapsed. And Dante looked at me differently after that — not with gratitude, exactly. With recognition.

The Salazar family did not accept the loss of the port authority connection gracefully. They sent a message. The message was a car bomb outside my father's business. No one was hurt. That was the message — not the explosion, but the restraint. They could have hurt someone. They chose not to. Yet.

I proposed a joint venture. The Caruso and Salazar families sharing the port authority connection, with Fuentes as the neutral administrator. It was either the most naive idea I had ever had or the most obvious one. Dante thought it was both.

I built a resource centre for women in situations like mine. Not a shelter — a centre. A place where women could come and find information, legal advice, financial guidance, and the specific kind of company that only comes from someone who has been where you are.

Her name was Pilar. She came back three times before she was ready to make a decision. I did not rush her. Rushing is what the people who trapped her had done. I had learned to wait.
